Healthy trees and plants
To keep healthy trees and plants, it is important to know what kind of soil you have. Soil types in the Charlotte area are clay, sand and silt. Clay is the predominant ingredient. It has nutrients and because it retains water, it holds the soil together. If the soil retains too much water, however, it will get too hard and the roots of trees and plants will not be able to grow causing them to rot and die.
You will need to rototill the soil to loosen it up for better drainage. Once you have tilled the soil, you may add compost or other organic materials which will offer nutrients for your trees or other plants.
The right combination of soil and organic materials is important and can be established by purchasing a soil test at your local garden supply store. Or you can call a tree or plant specialist in your area to come out and test your soil for you. They will be able to tell you what you need to keep your trees and plants happy.
